Glucocorticoids as a Treatment of RSD

Glucocorticoids as a Treatment of RSD. Unfortunately, many people do not view chronic pain as a disease. While some people may tell people suffering from chronic pain to “get over it,” it is important for people to be sympathetic. There are lots of reasons why people could suffer from pain which include traumatic injuries, serious infections, and even diseases of the nerves themselves. One of the most serious diseases that might cause chronic pain is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Recently, some of the information published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown that:

  • Chronic pain is often a barrier to treatment for those who are unable to adequately verbalize what they are feeling, including children and the elderly
  • Because chronic pain is caused by such a wide variety of conditions and diseases, it is challenging to control chronic pain
  • People who have been surveyed indicate that one of the hardest parts of chronic pain is the inability to sleep at night
  • Millions of people in the United States have reported that their pain has lasted for more than 24 hours at some point

Chronic pain is a severe issue that needs to be addressed. For those who have been suffering from RSD, they may feel like there is no hope for a recovery. On the other hand, there are treatment options available.

The Treatment Options: RSD

When someone has been diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, it is often only after a battery of tests and other incorrect diagnoses. Because of this, it can be challenging to find treatment options that work. Some of the possible treatment choices include:

  • Electric nerve stimulation
  • Nerve injections with anesthetic agents such as lidocaine
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Toradol
  • Narcotic and opioid agents such as Vicodin, Oxycodone, and Percocet
  • Surgery to cut problematic nerves

Unfortunately, some people aren’t able to achieve effective symptomatic relief even with all of these medications and treatment options. For this reason, research is being done to discover new treatment ideas.

Glucocorticoids Can Be Helpful

Recently, a research paper was published discussing the possible role that glucocorticoids could play in the treatment of RSD. Glucocorticoids work in a manner that is similar in some ways to steroids. On the other hand, there are also a few differences in the receptors that they bind to. Because of this, they could also provide a possible alternative to the typical medical options. More research needs to be done regarding glucocorticoids and how it compares to the treatment options that are already on the market; however, they could provide hope to people whose RSD is not controlled with the current treatment plans.
